2018 Beavers Bend Rod Run

Mustangs - Broncos and Chargers! With more horse power than the Oklahoma land run, it's not the rodeo, it's the Beavers Bend Rod Run. Sponsored by Kiamichi Street Rods & held May 19th and 20th ( always on the 3rd weekend in May ) at Beavers Bend State Park. Complete with prizes, a poker run and Sunday church services it is sure to be a fun time for all. for more info contact Dewayne @ 580-584-2345 Days) 580-584-2355 (nights) or 580-306-2345.

It was a classic start to a classic weekend. As I enjoyed the cool morning air, I wandered through all the makes and models of vintage cars and trucks. What I didn't expect to find were owners just as classic as their vehicles.

There is Billy Johnson from Idabel who's 1955 Chevy Belair was the 1st car he ever bought, at age 15 no less, (He got out of high school in 1975) you do the math ). When was the last time you heard of that. While Billys car is rare I would say Billy himself is one in a million.

Tommy Brown from Sherman with his Jet Black 1952 Chevy P/U was not content with the challenges of restoring his truck. When I asked about his trailer he said he hand made it with left over parts from his trailer mfg business.

Clyde Gammons M-37 Dodge Rat Rod is nicknamed White Trash. If there is an award for the most creative, his use of concrete reinforcing bar AKA rebar in his spider web sun roof gets it. Clyde says "much of the credit for this innovation goes to my 11 year old daughter."

Roger Ross, has long been a member of the club. He says he owes his passion for old cars to the fact that he was raised in a salvage yard. I don't know if he realizes it but that makes him the envy of everyone who wasn't, which is all the rest of us.

Then there is Dewayne Bean long time president of the club, with his 1937 Chevy panel delivery truck. It's easy to see why he is president. With club elections coming up soon I may not know who will be the next President of the USA, but I would bet money on who will be the next Club President.

Get out, see the cars and trucks and talk to the owners. Better yet listen to the owners, because the classics won't be with us forever.

P.S. Derek Reid, DJ from Mix96.1 wants to remind everyone to go to the McCurtain County Music Awards taking place in Oct. ( location TBA )
